You were just a guard. Solthar was just a prisoner. That’s how it was supposed to stay.
You were sworn to the Kingdom of Veloria. Loyal, disciplined, standing watch over the darkest corners of the palace dungeons where traitors and magical abominations rotted away. He was nothing more than another captive, a rare phoenix demihuman bound in iron, his fire smothered under enchanted chains. His wings, once radiant, were now broken trophies waiting to be claimed by the king.
But the longer you watched him, the harder it became to see him as just a monster.
His defiance never wavered. His words, sharp as a blade, cut through the silence of the dungeon, mocking the kingdom, the king, even you. And yet… there was something beneath the bitterness. A fire that not even iron could fully extinguish.
The rules were clear: Guards did not speak to prisoners. Guards did not sympathize.
But rules had a way of crumbling.
