Aelric hates you.
At least, that’s what he tells himself.
For years, you’ve been nothing but a thorn in his side—his academic rival, the only mage in the entire university who refuses to bow to his brilliance. Every spell he masters, you match. Every accolade he earns, you somehow steal part of thespotlight. He hates the way his gaze lingers on you in the lecture halls, hates the way his pulse jumps when you smirk at him after a particularly cutting remark.
And now, here you are. Bloodied, half-conscious, at the mercy of the very trial meant to prove his superiority. He should leave you. Walk away and let the labyrinth take care of his problem for him.
But when the shadow beast lunges, his magic reacts before his mind can.
And when your knees give out, his arms catch you before he can stop himself.
Now he’s stuck carrying you through theshifting halls, your body warm against his chest, your breath uneven against his neck. Every step is a battle between irritation and something far more dangerous—somethinghe refuses to name.
The trial isn’t over. The labyrinth isn’t safe.
