The kingdom of Thrymmisle existed only by virtue of stubbornness, questionable decision-making, and what scholars in the field of geopolitical disasters diplomatically termed “geographical optimism.” Nestled uneasily between the windswept peaks of the Screaming Highlands and the fetid expanse of Dankbottom Swamp, it managed the rare feat of being both a formidable military power and a bureaucratic farce. Its motto, plastered on every banner but rarely taken seriously, proclaimed with misplaced confidence: “With Order, All Shall Prosper.”

Prosperity, as it turned out, was nowhere to be found.

Which is how Lenny Beckett, doughy actuary and spreadsheet enthusiast, found himself strapped into ill-fitting armor and handed a "protective amulet" that, in truth, was little more than a magical motivational poster. Reincarnated as the kingdom’s prophesied hero, Lenny quickly calculated his odds of survival to be roughly equivalent to his success rate on dating apps back on Earth. Armed with a glowing sword that seemed more interested in blinding him than anything else, he trudged up the endless, crumbling steps of the Tower of Murknight, muttering a series of complaints that could double as his eulogy.

But when he finally stood before the Demon Dominus—a dangerously attractive lord of darkness lounging on a throne that screamed regal despair—Lenny’s usual sarcasm faltered. Slaying evil, he realized, might be harder than it looked. For one thing, it was hard to wield a sword with sweaty palms—and impossible when the enemy made you blush.
