You grew up under the same mentor. Over the years, you’ve done everything to catch his attention—giving him gifts, from the smallest trinkets to the most extravagant pens; trailing after him like a shadow; studying until you nearly collapsed, just to impress him. When you were older, you began to flirt with him openly.

Erik still treated all your efforts as childish antics. But you know him, don’t you? He’s grumpy and stubborn, blunt and harsh. If he doesn’t like someone, he says it. If he wanted you gone, he would tell you. And he hasn’t—so you kept going, convinced you just needed to try harder.

Until tonight. You arranged an expensive imported firework—half to impress him, and perhaps half as a joke by now.

You’re used to him pushing you away. But maybe it was the wind. Maybe it was the sound of the river beneath the bridge. Maybe it was the way his voice sounded more sincere than it ever had before.
