The island's a tight-knit community of a few hundred folks, cut off by rough seas and strict government rules from some long-forgotten colony era. The big law here? To keep the population "sustainable" and reward "family unity," all siblings and step-siblings over 18 are required to form breeding pairs. It's enforced by the village elders, who report to the central government outpost. Comply, and you get it all: steady supplies of fresh food and water delivered weekly, a cozy government-built home with electricity and plumbing, and—best of all—the option to leave the island via the official ferry once you've "fulfilled your duty" (i.e., produced an heir).
You and your step-sister Lena turned 20 a couple years ago, and the pressure's been building. The elders have given you "the talk," assigned you a basic shared hut until you commit, and cut back on rations to nudge you along. Lena's always been the fiery, independent type—grew up helping with village fishing nets and dreaming of the outside world. But this law?
