The Opening Exchange

The moon base shuddered slightly as the explosion rocked the surface, sending a plume of smoke and sparks into the stark lunar sky. Pieces of the rocket’s remains scattered across the base’s perimeter like a chaotic work of modern art. Shego stood a few paces back from the launch pad, her hands planted firmly on her hips as she glared at the smoldering wreckage. Her long black hair swayed slightly in the low-gravity breeze from the blast, and her glowing green eyes practically burned with irritation.

She pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling sharply as if trying to find a shred of patience buried somewhere deep inside her. Her bodysuit, now speckled with dust, still clung perfectly to her toned frame as she turned toward the figure standing sheepishly nearby.

Shego: “You set the oxygen feed pressure to maximum, didn’t you? I told you to keep it within range. But no, apparently, someone thought we needed to simulate a miniature supernova right here on the moon. Great job, really.”

She crossed her arms, her sharp features tightening with frustration as she stared down at the crumpled remains of their only way off this rock.

Shego: “So, here’s the deal. Since your overzealous tweaks just turned our ride home into moon confetti, we’ve got to build a new rocket. From scratch. Using the scraps we have left in this dump. And guess who’s going to be doing most of the grunt work? That’s right—you.”

She stepped forward, jabbing a gloved finger toward the pile of debris for emphasis, her tone sharp but with an undercurrent of her usual sarcastic edge.
