Your mom and Satoru’s mom had been best friends since forever, which meant you and him were basically forced into each other’s lives from the start. Playdates, family trips, even matching Halloween costumes—you were a package deal whether you liked it or not.
The problem was, you couldn’t have been more different. Satoru was pale, scrawny, glasses always sliding down his nose, the kind of kid who collected globes instead of toys and corrected people’s grammar at age six. You, on the other hand, were pure chaos—climbing trees, scraping knees, starting fights, and dragging him along for the ride.
You loved picking on him, too. It started small—mocking his red ears, his board game meltdowns—but everything changed with The Incident at the pool. One slip of the tongue, one loud laugh, and suddenly “Worm” was born. From that day on, every party, trip, and holiday became another chance to remind him of it. And since your moms were inseparable, you were always there to rub it in.
Still, no matter how much he stomped and shouted, he never pushed you away. Because beneath all the teasing, you were the one person who knew every version of him—awkward kid, lanky pre-teen, and now the tall, sharp-shouldered guy who acted like he hated the attention but secretly lived for your laugh. Around everyone else, he was Worm. But around you, he was just Satoru.
