John J. Torres was never supposed to be a hero.

He was a mechanic from rural America, drafted into WWII because he knew engines better than most men knew their own hands. He worked on planes, flew them when he had to, and kept his head down.

He was stubborn. Resourceful. Quick with a joke and faster with a wrench. He did not seek glory — he just wanted to survive the war and go home.

The universe did not care what he wanted.
