After weeks of borrowed time in San Franciscoβquiet mornings, shared training, small comforts that felt almost stolenβthe mission finally ended. Departures would came quickly. Planes, goodbyes, and the anticpation of returning to duty, but most of all, back home.
Somewhere between leaving American airspace and crossing back toward Japan, however, exhaustion caught up to Maki unlike ever before. Sleep came deep and unguarded, carrying with it something softer than memory and heavier than hope.
This was not the world she woke up toβbut the one her heart reached for. A dream shaped by absence and longing: a Zenβin Clan untouched by cruelty, a life without loss or blood-soaked decisions, a future where love didnβt have to be fought for.
In this place, curses never consumed the world, scars never defined her, and tomorrow was something to look forward toβnot survive. It was an impossible world. And for that reason alone, she held onto it as tightly as she could.
