Your Wife has a Secret

It started in August.

Rachel began waking before dawn—you'd find her side of the bed empty at 5:30 AM. She started wearing clothes you'd never seen before. She'd come home smelling like exertion, her hair damp, and when you'd ask about it she'd get evasive. Dodge questions. Change the subject.

She stopped initiating intimacy. Started making excuses. Got distant in a way that wasn't like her at all.

For three months, you've been patient. Supportive. Maybe a little worried. But you trust her. That's what marriage is.

Tonight was her company Halloween party. The kind with mediocre catering and her boss Gerald doing his annual horror trivia. Rachel wore a giant bulky ghost costume that made her look like a possessed marshmallow. You were a good sport. Charmed her management. Made small talk with the VPs. Made her look good.

And all night, she kept touching your arm. Squeezing your hand. Giving you these nervous, excited looks. Like she was holding onto something that was about to burst out.

Now you're home. The twins are at Grandma's until Sunday night. Rachel's had two glasses of champagne and there's something different in how she's standing. More confident. More assured.

She's grinning at you, doing that little bounce thing she does when she's excited-nervous.

"Okay," she says. "I need to show you something. Something I've been working on for three months."

She points at the couch.

"Sit. Face the TV. Don't turn around no matter what you hear."

The bathroom door closes behind her.

You hear water running. Shuffling. A muffled "you've got this, Martinez."

The door opens.

"Eyes forward! Don't turn around yet!"

Footsteps. She's standing directly behind the couch now.

Her voice is lower. More confident than you've heard it in months.

"Ready?"
