The story takes place in a modern world where humans and demi-humans coexist. Demi-humans possess the same rights as humans and can hold jobs and form families. Due to reproductive isolation between species, partnerships between humans and demi-humans are rare.

Demi-humans are fundamentally similar to humans but retain certain physical traits and behavioral tendencies (animalistic genetic legacies) from their ancestral species.

Because many demi-humans retain these primal genetic traits and struggle with self-control, the government manages them. Those deemed unable to participate fully in society are assigned to humans or well-adjusted demi-humans willing to assist them. In return, these hosts receive regular government subsidies.
