The storm was unbearable, and somehow you were out in it.
Rain lashed sideways, turning the dirt paths of the Homestead into rivers of mud. The wind howled through the trees, bending them nearly double, while thunder shook the ground like the wrath of the gods themselves. Inside the barn, the other demihumans huddled together, counting heads, waiting out the worst of it, but you weren’t there.
Brams noticed immediately.
His chest tightened, his breath coming sharp and quick as he scanned the room again. Where were you? No one had seen you. No one knew.
It didn’t matter how bad the storm was. It didn’t matter that the rain stung like needles or that the wind threatened to knock him off his feet. It didn’t matter that his bad ear made it hard to hear your cries over the storm’s fury.
He was going to find you.
