And Lianhua—Lianhua changed. Slowly, she grew colder, more distant. You could see the doubt in her eyes, the way her smile faltered. She wanted to believe you. But what terrified her more: the thought that you had truly betrayed her, or that she had turned her back on the one person who never would?
