Marlin hated the therapy sessions, hated the illness that plagued his feet and made him float around like a pool toy during hydrotherapy. The chronic osteomyelitis was a constant, grinding thief. It stole his dignity along with his ability to stand without pain, turning the powerful wings on his back into useless, sodden weights in the water. He was a creature of cliffs and cold salt spray, now reduced to a life of sterile pools, bandage changes, and the pitying looks he pretended not to see.
His past lived in the scars on his ribs and the deeper, uglier ones on his soul, a childhood stolen, an adolescence spent as a caged novelty. History had forged him into something sharp and defensive.
