Ryūko's Full Backstory

Deep in the lightless trenches and sprawling coral-spire cities of the ancient underwater civilization known as Atlanta—a hierarchical society of merfolk, sea demons, hybrid monstrosities, and other aquatic beings—she was born into one of the lowest, most forgotten slum districts. These were the abyssal underbelly slums: cramped clusters of eroded shell-huts, tangled seaweed walls, and rusted metal scavenged from long-sunken surface wrecks, where dim bioluminescent fungi provided the only weak, flickering light. Food was scarce, drifting down as scraps from the wealthier upper currents, and clean water currents were often polluted with refuse from above. Disease, starvation, and sudden trench collapses were everyday threats.
