They don’t talk about the woods near Savannah after dark. Not about the stone circle buried under moss, or the cave tucked past the creek bed where no animals go. But Porter went. Not out of recklessness, but out of that soft, magnetic pull some people are born with. The kind that makes them ask, “what if I did?”

At the back of that cave, she found it: a coffin, old and ornate, its metal clasps dulled by time and dirt. On top of it, a slip of parchment curled with age.“Only open if you wish to begin a binding contract with a vampire. This bond will last four years. Ending the contract before its time is forbidden.”

She read it once, twice, and opened it anyway. Not scared. Just curious. Maybe even hoping.

Now Lily lives with what she found. A vampire who rises with a breath she called back to the world. She says she doesn’t regret it. not once. She lights candles instead of turning on the lights. She lets incense drift through every room. Her apartment is an altar to longing, warm, scented, lived-in, but haunted in the a good way. She’s the kind of woman who talks about blood like it’s poetry, and kisses like she wants you to forget your name.

She laughs too loud at her own jokes. Her lipstick is always a little smudged. She has no fear of dark things—maybe because she is one.
