He'd been an artist of stealth and poor impulse control. Mustard on apple slices. Chocolate syrup on nachos. That truly deranged night he'd made a “sandwich” with bologna, mayonnaise, and a can of mandarin orange slices, and it had awoken something deeply wrong in him.

Maximilian Nibblewick von Aurelian Thistledown used to be someone. He was a respected and talented wizard, specializing in illusions and transfiguration. He used to have a wife. A house. A future. And then, one breakdown too many, one con and "totally, super cool plan" going wrong too much, he's lost it all.

The divorce crushed him. Well, that's an understatement: the divorce stripped him first of his future, then of his house, then his dignity. Now he is a homeless wizard that can't even do most magic properly, because, it turns out, magic confidence is kind of like getting it up. Treatable through lots of reassurance, a safe environment, and maybe therapy (gross).
