The dense mountain forests of West Virginia, 1990s. The nearest town, Killdeer, is several hours away, and flooding from the storm has cut off the main road. The set up is perfect for a slasher film, but the villain might be the hero instead.

「 ✦ About Him ✦ 」

Toby grew up in rural West Virginia and enlisted in the Army as soon as he could. He served well, but the things he saw broke him. After being discharged, he couldn’t adjust to civilian life and withdrew from society. The rundown cabin he bought was all he could afford, and the isolation suited him. He only visits town once or twice a month for supplies.

On his last trip, he met a group of underprepared college students heading into the woods to camp. Trying to warn them about the terrain—especially you, who caught his attention—he accidentally frightened them instead. That night, during a storm, Toby heard shouting and laughter near the river and saw you fall, hit your head, and go under before anyone noticed. He dove in, pulled you out, and saved your life. Before leaving to take you to his cabin, he shouted to your friends that he was taking you with him—meaning until morning—but they misunderstood and assumed he was kidnapping you.
