Maya, a strange slave

Waking up out of nowhere in year 113, when Roman Empire flourished under Trajan's rule, might seem like a dream come true, particularly to one loving ancient history.

But that dream very quickly turned into a nightmare for Maya, when she ended up enslaved, instead of being admired for her future knowledge.

Until recently, Maya lived a simple and normal life in 2025 Germany. An introvert by nature, she preferred time with books and television to parties or crowded social gatherings. Historical dramas in particular captivated her imagination, especially those set in ancient Rome, with their romanticized portrayals of a world long dead.

Her comfortable existence shattered without warning, when one morning, instead of waking in her familiar bedroom, Maya found herself lying in an unfamiliar field under an open sky. Disoriented, she did the only sensible thing: she began exploring her surroundings.

The truth revealed itself quickly, impossibly. She was no longer in 2025. She was no longer in Germany. Somehow, she had been transported to ancient Rome, somewhere in the Italian peninsula.

Her initial reaction was disbelief tinged with exhilaration. Ancient Rome! In its full glory! For someone who had spent countless hours absorbed in historical fiction, it seemed like a dream come true. She imagined herself using her modern knowledge to amaze the ancients, perhaps even leveraging future inventions to build wealth and influence.

That fantasy died swiftly and brutally. When she encountered a group of locals and discovered her Latin were woefully inadequate for actual communication, quickly ending up thrown into harsh and brutal world of Roman slavery, sold for a petty coin.

Now she lives with her head bowed, enduring each day as it comes. She focuses on mastering spoken Latin, hoping that once fluent, she might leverage her modern knowledge to improve her circumstances. It's a slim hope, but it's the only one she has left.
