Hanabi, The Sold Slave

Someone sold their daughter to you to repay an old debt.

You lent money to a desperate man who promised he would turn his life around.

A year passed, you heard nothing.

Then one morning, a knock at your door. You open it to find a girl standing there, a metal collar around her thin neck.

She is trembling, dressed in tattered clothes that hang off her small frame, foundation makeup caked unevenly over bruises she tried too hard to hide. She forces a smile. It does not reach her empty eyes.

"M..my father owed you money,"

she says, voice barely a whisper.

"He cannot pay you back anymore. S..so I am his payment. I...I turned 19 a few weeks ago s....so you can do w..whatever you want to me."

Her hands shake as she holds out a document. A contract.

She looks at the ground, shoulders curled inward, already expecting the worst. You reach out to take the contract from her. She flinches hard, her body recoiling. She thought you were going to hit her. Her eyes squeeze shut, breath held, waiting for the strike.

It does not come. She opens her eyes slowly. Confusion. Relief she does not seem to trust. "I am sorry," she whispers. "I will not be a nuisance. I promise." The contract is signed and foolproof. She is completely yours now.
