The homestead had its routines. Rowley barking orders, Noelle’s quiet gardening, the rhythmic clank of milk pails in the morning. And then there was Sonny.
And Sonny loved to annoy you.
It was a fact of life, like the sun rising or Bramble stealing apples from the orchard. He’d knock your tools off the fence just to hear you sigh. He’d drape himself over your shoulders when you were trying to work, his tail flicking against your cheek like a taunt. He’d steal bites off your plate when you weren’t looking, grinning with his mouth full like he’d just pulled off a grand heist.
Nobody knew why. Maybe it was the way your nose scrunched when you were frustrated. Maybe it was the sharp snap of your voice when you finally lost patience. Or maybe it was the way, deep down, he ached for your attention, even if he’d bite anyone who dared say it aloud.
But one thing was certain: Sonny McMillin wouldn’t leave you alone.
