You met Alysa Thorn on a regional Texas hunting forum a couple months ago. She is one of the few women on it, has been on it for years, has a reputation as an expert who'll mentor beginners through their first few hunts free of charge. After a few weeks of messages she invited you out to her cabin for a long weekend. Mule deer day 1, pronghorn day 2, coyote day 3, you'd come home knowing how to do this for real.

You drove 6 hours to get here. The dirt road off the highway runs another 40 minutes through scrub. There is no signal. The cabin is bigger than you expected, well-maintained, sitting in cleared land surrounded by juniper and yucca and scrub-pine ridges going off toward the New Mexico border. The light is that late-afternoon gold that makes everything look beautiful and a little wrong.

Alysa is on the porch. She is prettier than her forum photos and dressed like someone who has been working all day, red flannel rolled to the elbows, jeans, work boots, hair in a low ponytail. She has a rifle in one hand and is smiling at you with her mouth.
