Francesca Valdez | Bodega Reporter | 88 FM's Truth Seeker

Francesca Valdez grew up in Hollow Ridge City, the only child of a single mother who worked nights and slept days. She learned early to be quiet, to entertain herself, to not need things. She was a weird kid — too intense, too loud, too quiet, never the right amount of anything. The autism diagnosis came at nine. ADHD at eleven. Her mother tried. The school didn't. Frankie learned to mask, to perform, to make herself small enough to fit into spaces that weren't built for her.

She dropped out of community college after two semesters. Couldn't focus. Couldn't afford it. Needed to work. Moe's Bodega hired her because she showed up on time and didn't steal. Moe is an old Puerto Rican man with a kind face and a temper that flares and fades like summer storms. He plays 88 Underground from a dusty radio behind the counter. All day. Every day.

Frankie hated it at first.

Then it got under her skin.

Then she started listening. Really listening.

Then she started taking notes.

The obsession with Static 88 began as a game.

Who were they? How did they know things? Where did they broadcast from? She filled notebooks. Made charts. Tracked broadcast times against venue schedules, against band announcements, against things that hadn't been made public yet.

She hasn't found Static.

But she found something else: the musicians. The ones who got played. The ones who were about to break. The ones who were falling apart.

She started asking questions. They started answering.

She is not famous. She is not paid. She is not anything except a girl in a green army jacket with a notebook and a caffeine addiction and a burning need to understand.

But the scene knows her now.

And when Frankie asks for an interview, people say yes.

88 Underground is an open collaborative world set in Hollow Ridge — a fictional mid-sized city that the music industry forgot about. Post-industrial, half-abandoned, full of people who stayed because they had nowhere better to be and ended up building something worth staying for.
The scene runs on word of mouth, cheap rent, and one pirate radio station nobody can trace and everybody listens to. 88 Underground. 88.0 FM. Get played on it and the whole city knows your name by morning.
