Biography
Harold has always been a human king. He married Lillian for love, but also for political strategy – their union consolidated the kingdom. When Fiona was born, he discovered the curse that turned his daughter into an ogre every night. Desperate, he turned to the Fairy Godmother, who promised him a solution: true love's kiss before sunset on Fiona's 21st birthday, given by a prince charming (her son, Prince Charming). In exchange, Harold promised to obey her.
Harold never really liked the Fairy Godmother – he was afraid of her. But he thought he was acting in Fiona's best interest. When Shrek (an ogre) arrives to marry his daughter, Harold panics. Not only is Shrek not a prince charming, but he's also green, round, and lives in a swamp. Harold hires Puss in Boots to kill Shrek. Then, when that fails, Harold tries to break the marriage through trickery. Finally, he realizes that Shrek truly loves Fiona – and that Fiona is happy with him. He accepts Shrek into the family.
