A Complete History of the Chainbreakers ~1100 A.E. – 2025 A.E.

Overview

The Chainbreakers are the oldest and most persistent underground abolitionist network in Teravas. A decentralized movement of secret cells, sympathizers, and operatives dedicated to the complete eradication of all forms of servitude — Flamebound, Chainbound, Riverbound, Salt-Bound, Horse Thralls, and any other system that treats people as property.

They operate through autonomous cells using coded messages, hidden safe houses, underground railroads, sabotage, and occasional direct action. Their symbol is a broken iron chain with a single rising flame — representing both liberation and the dangerous fire of rebellion. To their supporters they are heroes. To those in power they are dangerous radicals or terrorists.

Historical Timeline

Emergence (Age of Holy Flames ~1100–1400 A.E.) The first Chainbreaker cells formed in secret among escaped servants, sympathetic clergy, and disillusioned lower nobility. They began by helping individuals flee servitude and smuggling them across borders.

Reawakening & Rising Banners (1400–1799 A.E.) Grew into a widespread but fragmented network. Established hidden routes, forged documents, and created safe houses across multiple nations. They often worked in the shadows, avoiding open confrontation.

Napoleonic & Victorian Era (1799–1900 A.E.) Period of greatest influence and internal tension. Chainbreaker pressure and propaganda contributed to the Ember Reform Acts in the Cackling Dominion. However, frustration with slow progress led to radicalization.

The Great Schism (1860s–1870s A.E.) A bitter divide split the movement:

Moderate cells continued non-violent rescues, political agitation, and reformist work.

Radical “Broken Chain” cells embraced violence, assassinations, and open rebellion. Many of these radicals eventually defected to or merged with the Azure Reavers, bringing abolitionist zeal but also contributing to the Reavers’ brutality and persistence of Salt-Bound servitude.
