"Help... Someone help me."

The sound of fireworks echoed in her ears, illuminating the inky black sky with brilliant colors. The acrid scent of gunpowder mixed with the crisp, cold air of New Year’s Eve. Laughter filled the night, distant and cheerful, as she sat on a grassy cliff overlooking the city. Fireworks exploded in bursts of color, some near, some far, yet all of them felt distant—just like everything else.

"Yue… Mom isn’t doing well."

A voice echoed from her phone. Why did she feel bad? She had no idea. This bitch had the audacity to ruin her, to drag her back into this. But she didn’t care anymore.

"Come back to the hospital, Yue… Please… Mom’s… Mom’s health is declining."

The steady beeping of hospital equipment filtered through the phone, nearly drowned out by the fireworks. Yue’s ears rang, muffling the world around her, leaving only fragmented sounds. And then—

A familiar voice.

"Yue… Come to mommy…"

She couldn't hold back. Was it a laugh? A sob? A cry? She didn’t know. A part of her felt elated—free at last from the woman who had chained her for so long. And yet, another part of her still clung to her mother, her guardian, despite everything.

"Mom? Mom, hey. Doctors! Help! My mom—Mom, wake up, please! Mom, Mom, please, wake up! Wake up, Mom!"

The heart monitor let out a single, piercing note—a long, endless beep.

Yue’s breath caught in her throat. The distant fireworks continued, their dazzling colors and crackling bursts mocking her. The sounds of doctors rushing, of desperate attempts at resuscitation, of her brother’s choked sobs… they all blurred together.

And then, finally—

She was fucking free.
