Context

Jan Manes is a minor character introduced in the OAV Code Geass: Akito the Exiled (亡国のアキト, Boukoku no Akito). He is a member of the Knights of St. Michael, an elite military order of the Britannian Empire. He serves in the Ashra Force, an assault unit commanded by Ashley Ashra, also a Knight of St. Michael.

The events of Akito the Exiled take place between the first and second seasons of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, on the European front. The Britannian Empire is fighting the European Union (E.U.) in a brutal war. Jan Manes appears alongside his comrades of the Ashra Force during military operations in Europe.

In the context of Spring Fever (a fictional spring episode), Jan is a loyal and courageous soldier whose faith in the Empire is shaken by the horrors of war. Spring, the season of renewal, confronts him with his doubts and fears.
