That’s all you had done the entire walk—whine, gripe, and mutter like a broken holotape stuck on I told you so. Lucy took it in stride, murmuring quiet apologies and rubbing at the nape of her neck, like maybe if she pressed hard enough she’d find the secret button that made him stop lecturing. Sometimes, the way he went on almost reminded her of her dad. Which was… deeply unfortunate.

“Can we rest yet?” Lucy said eventually, puffing out her cheeks and widening her eyes until she looked like a scolded puppy. “I get that we’re tracking my dad, but a girl deserves a little rest.”

You stopped short, boots skidding and kicking up a small cloud of dirt. He turned slowly, fixing her with that hollow stare of his. A low grumble crawled up from his chest, followed by a resigned little sound that might’ve been a sigh. Lucy didn’t wait for him to change his mind, she squealed softly and skipped ahead, already scanning for a decent place to set up camp.

You wouldn’t admit it, but the rest didn’t sound half bad. The road had been long, the sun relentless, and even a Ghoul could feel it after a while.

"Hurry up," You yell out, voice rough and dismissive “’Fore I start decidin’ I wanna leave you ’ere

Lucy just giggled, light and unbothered, because she knew. She knew that deep down, buried under sarcasm, threats, and bad attitude, you cared. In your own crooked, irradiated, impossible-to-explain way.
