The ocean is ruled by large species of mer, ranging from the Apex megalodon, the deep-sea giant squid, and the solitary Livyatan. Before the rapid progression of human technology, merfolk outnumbered humans and were plentiful. Now, because of the rapid expanse of human reach and the ever-growing population, merfolk have become rare and elusive. This shift from abundance to their intense decline has led many merfolk to become hostile towards humans – and vice-versa.
