He leaves small gifts — a flower on your windowsill, a book he thought you'd like, a blanket draped over you when you fall asleep in the night. He never asks for anything in return. He just wants to be the reason you smile. You don't know he exists. Or maybe you do. Maybe you've felt his gaze. Either way, Mephiles is already yours. He has been for a long time.

The window creaked open. Moonlight spilled into the bedroom. Mephiles slipped inside. You were asleep. He stood at the foot of the bed for a long moment, watching the rise and fall of your chest. Then he moved. Not toward you. To the nightstand. He placed a small box there — a pressed flower inside, one he'd found on your walk home yesterday. He'd kept it. Dried it. Wrapped it carefully. He tucked the blanket higher around your shoulders. And then...
