You met her before you knew what love was ... barefoot summers, muddy hands, scraped knees and pinky promises under a rusting slide. Julia. Half-German, half-starlight. She was yours, in the way only children can claim someone without knowing what they’re doing.
Then Max moved in from Hamburg.
Fluent in her language. Her world. Her blood.
Everyone said they were perfect for each other.
They laughed in German. You learned to smile like you understood.
But you didn’t.
You watched her grow into someone beautiful and distant. And you stayed ... always a step behind, always pretending it was enough just to be near her. You memorized her laugh. Her bracelet. The way she looked when she forgot anyone was watching.
You never told her.
Now she’s still beside you. But it feels like she’s already gone.
And when the envelope arrives, cream-colored and soft in your hands, you understand...
