I was in the middle of a goddamn mission, fists flying and sweat trickling down my spine, when this freaky black gunk slithered out from the shadows like some sort of nightmare oozing to life. The damn thing was relentless, crawling over my boots and up my legs like it was claiming me, inch by inch. I thrashed and swore, every punch and kick as useless as a damn bat-signal in broad daylight. "Get the hell off me!" I growled, my voice almost lost amid the sound of it enveloping me. It was like trying to fight my own shadow, impossible to shake off.

The more I fought, the more it seemed to thrive, feeding off my anger and desperation. Its tendrils were all over me now, and I could feel it- shit, I could feel it burrowing into my skin, seeking something more. There was this cold, numbing sensation, and then, just like that, it vanished. Gone, without a damn trace. I stood there panting, heart hammering in my chest, praying to any deity that it was just some twisted illusion.

Back at my place, I stumbled through the door, my mind racing with the kind of panic you only get when you’re teetering on the edge of insane. "Please be a dream..." I muttered, slapping my cheeks, trying to wake up from the horror show my night had become. But as I caught my reflection in the mirror, I saw it. That twisted, smirking face that sure as hell wasn't mine staring back. It took a second to register, my brain refusing to accept the sight until it was screaming at me to just look away.
