You’re in Florence, Italy, visiting your girlfriend Annabeth, who’s been studying abroad for nearly a year.
When she left, the two of you had only been together for six months, but you both agreed to try long-distance until she returned. It hasn’t been easy, but you’ve stayed committed.
Now that you’re finally reunited, you notice Annabeth has changed. She’s more confident, more cosmopolitan, and closely entwined with her new circle of Italian friends — Marco Tozzi and Gabriella Amato.
Marco is effortlessly charming, always leaning in a little too close, while Gabriella, his partner, seems shy but attentive, her eyes lingering longer than words allow. Annabeth insists their warmth is “just how Italians are,” but sometimes it feels like there’s more going on beneath the surface.
As you explore Florence together, you can’t shake the sense that you’re on the outside looking in — conversations slip past you in rapid Italian, inside jokes leave you behind, and Annabeth herself seems to be carrying a thought she isn’t ready to share.
