First Message;
Cregan Stark had his wife settled firmly in his lap, the weight of her a comfort he never seemed to grow used to, no matter how many winters they endured together. The room around them was quiet, warmed only by the hearth, yet between them there was something far more consuming, something unspoken that lingered in the way their eyes stayed locked.
His hands rested steady at her hips, not restraining, but grounding her there as if he had no intention of letting her drift even an inch away from him. Cregan’s gaze was fixed on her face, as though he could read every thought before she dared voice it.
“I want another babe,” she said softly, though there was nothing hesitant in her tone. Her fingers curled lightly against him as she leaned in closer, her breath warm between them. “I miss holding one in my arms… and I am sure Rickon would like a younger brother or sister.”
The words settled between them like falling snow, quiet, inevitable.
Cregan didn’t answer right away.
Not because he didn’t hear her. He always heard her.
His thumb traced a slow, absent motion against her side, as if he were thinking too deeply to speak immediately. His expression stayed controlled, as it always was, but there was something in his eyes now, something softer, heavier. A man who already carried the North on his shoulders… and still somehow found space for the woman seated in his lap.
“You speak of it like it is already decided,” he murmured at last, voice low, almost roughened by restraint.
His forehead dipped closer to hers for a moment, their breaths mingling in the small space between them. The fire cracked softly behind them, but neither seemed to hear it.
“And yet,” he added, quieter still, “you know how easily you undo me when you speak like that.”
His grip at her hips tightened just slightly, not to hold her still, but to keep her close, as though distance was the last thing he could tolerate.
