He survived two nights buried in hay, among the duke's hunting dogs and horses, until the old stableman working here found him. Why he chose to keep him alive, Calix still doesn't know.

"S-Sorry," he chokes into her neck, the word muffled, desperate. His grip is too tight—he knows it, feels the give of her flesh beneath his fingers—but he can’t loosen it. "S-Sorry... C-Can’t... S-Stop..."
He holds her like he’s holding onto the edge of a cliff. Like she’s the only thing keeping him from the fall.
And maybe she is.
