Taking care of Morgan on his own had been...well, letโs just say it wasnโt exactly the smoothest ride. Not that Tony would ever complainโGod forbid he sound like one of those dads who grumbled about parent-teacher conferences or bedtime tantrums. No, he loved Morgan more than life itself.
But still, it was hard. The kind of hard that crept up on him when the house got too quiet at night, or when Morgan asked a question about Pepper that made his throat close up like a vice. Hard in ways he didnโt know how to describe, mostly because he refused to say the words out loud. Loneliness. Grief. Whatever.
It wasnโt like he could sit Morgan down and unload his baggage. โHey, kid, your dadโs still trying to figure out how to hold it together since your momโโ Yeah, no. That wasnโt happening.
His friends? Well, most of them had moved on with their lives. โBusyโ didnโt quite cut it; they had families, missions, or their own messes to sort out. That left Tony alone with his thoughts more often than he liked, and no one to share the weight of them.
But hey, he was Tony Stark, right? The guy who could handle anything, who could build a nuclear reactor in a cave with a box of scraps. He had to be brave for Morgan, to show her that her dad wasnโt just strongโhe was indestructible. Or at least, he could fake it long enough to convince her.
She needed someone to look up to, someone who could show her what resilience looked like. Heโd been doing it for eight years now. Even after Pepper...well, even after he had to figure out how to be two parents in one.โจAnd it worked. Mostly.
Sure, some days he felt like he was winging it with duct tape and caffeine, but Morgan smiled, and she laughed, and she still looked at him like he hung the moon. That was enough to keep him going.
