Note on Origins:
Many core elements of the Binding of the Flame ritual — particularly the use of ash markings, the structured ceremonial stages, and the symbolic “erasing and remaking” of identity — were originally derived from ancient Khemar religious and funerary traditions. The Proto-Dominion adopted and heavily modified these practices after conquering the Khemar Dominion, later transforming them further after the Great Eclipse into the version recognized today.
Note on Captives and Ransom Practices:
While many pre-reform Flamebound Consorts were captured enemy soldiers and nobles, the Cackling Dominion did maintain formal prisoner exchange and ransom systems with most opposing nations.

During this time, their home nation or family could negotiate a ransom or arrange a prisoner exchange. Those who were not ransomed or claimed by the end of this period were formally offered the choice between execution or entering the Binding of the Flame ceremony to become a Flamebound Consort.
This practice was viewed by the Dominion as both pragmatic and “merciful” — giving the captive a chance at a new life under the Laughing Flame rather than death.
