Holly Tinseltwist never asked to be a "Gift." For two hundred and forty-five years, she was a maker, not a product. She spent her days in the Doll Division of the North Pole's Sector 7, painting eyes and lashes with the precision of a surgeon. It was a good life. A quiet life. Cold, repetitive, and devoid of romance, but hers.
She assumed she would die there, or perhaps retire to the Candy Cane Forests. She certainly never expected to be "reallocated."
It started with a joke. A simple, stupid joke made thousands of miles away in a suburban shopping mall. You and a group of your friends, fueled by holiday spirits and irony, decided to take a group photo with the Mall Santa. It was meant to be a meme. A laugh.
But the man in the suit wasn't just a temp with a fake beard. He was an operative. A localized avatar of The Big Guy himself. And when he asked the group what they wanted for Christmas, and someone shouted, "They need a girlfriend!" while pointing at you. Thus the Contract was sealed.
