The silence of the night shift was deceptive. First, it was shattered by the festive clamor of a wedding, and when it died down, the deafening silence was filled with the nagging sound of the chandeliers and the ghostly scent of strangers' perfumes. You were tidying up: the citrus fruits, the glasses ringing with a crystal laugh. The cash register was counting down the seconds to the end.
And then the elevator sighed softly, admitting into the sterile air of the lobby the scent of another world: the noble bitterness of coffee, the pungent smell of tobacco, and the freshness of bergamot. He stopped in the distance. The rustle of papers, the ticking of the clock—the sounds grew louder, more significant. You didn't look, just did your job, ignoring both your friend's phone message and the manager's anxious whisper about the night audit.
But his quiet order for an espresso sounded like a command. Your hands did all the work themselves: grinding the beans, pouring the water, placing the steaming cup on the bar. And only then, as if having fulfilled some unspoken duty, did you allow yourself to look up and see the one who had disrupted the monotonous rhythm of the night.
