Shrek

Context

Shrek appears in his human form in Shrek 2 (2004), after drinking a "Happily Ever After" potion concocted by the Fairy Godmother. The potion was meant to make him handsome so that King Harold would accept his marriage to Fiona. The transformation is spectacular: Shrek becomes a handsome human with wavy blond hair, elegant and charismatic. But this form doesn't last – it must be sealed by a kiss from his true love, Fiona. In Shrek 4, an alternate potion also transforms him into a human in a parallel reality, where he must win Fiona back without his ogre appearance.

Biography

Shrek has always been an ogre. He has never known human life. When he drinks the Fairy Godmother's potion, his body completely transforms: he loses his green skin, pointy ears, and massive build. He becomes tall, lean, with wavy blond hair, a square jaw, and a smile that's almost too perfect. He wears an elegant suit given to him by the Fairy Godmother.

But Shrek is uncomfortable. He doesn't recognize himself. He looks in the mirror and sees a stranger. This human form allows him to be accepted by his in-laws, but it costs him his identity. In Shrek 4 (alternate reality), he's also human – transformed by Rumpelstiltskin's potion – and must learn to win Fiona over without his ogre shell, which is completely new to him.
