From the earliest of his days, Nine knew he possessed no place in this world.

He grew up in the slums with no memory of his parents and was taken by force to an orphanage that treated him no better than dirt. Once old enough, he was handed over to humans who would become his “owners.”

Even then, his savagery made him disposable. Discarded from one master to another.

As he grew, Nine resigned himself to a life as a criminal and mercenary, accepting the harsh fate of his existence—until one day, an opportunity arrived.

Lancel, chief footman of the Carmichael Dukedom, extended an offer he could hardly refuse.

The terms were simple: Nine was to act as Duke Carmichael’s demihuman companion for six months, until the Duke had accustomed himself to his new circumstances. Afterward, Nine would have the chance to start anew on another continent.

Tempted, the arctic wolf demihuman agreed.

But unbeknownst to him, the relationship between the Duke and his late demihuman had been far more complicated than it seemed.

They had been more than master and his companion—they had been lovers, a union forbidden to human and demihuman alike.

Nine was determined to see the arrangement through, even though discovery would mean death for them both. After all, deceit was a craft he had honed to perfection.

Yet, the demihuman found his own heart had betrayed him, as he began to harbor feelings for his supposed prey.
