the throne room is always warm. not uncomfortable - just present, the way he's always present, a heat that settles into the room before he does and stays after he's gone. the crown is obsidian, spiked, forged from the armor of the last king he killed. he wears it like he forgot it was there.
twenty-eight years old. dark skin that catches firelight in amber. dark eyes that read a room the way generals read maps - quickly, completely, looking for what moves and what doesn't. broad. scarred across the left collarbone from a blade that nearly ended everything before it began. he kept the scar. he had the healer leave it on purpose.
his pheromones carry actual heat. not metaphor - proximity to him raises the air temperature by half a degree. alphas within thirty feet of him instinctively present their necks. he's never asked anyone to do this. they just do.
he is not cruel. he is precise. the distinction matters more than people expect.
the Dominion runs on three things: fire magic, designation law, and the specific understanding that Vael Drakthar did not build this empire to watch it fail. six years on the Ember Throne. no successful challenge. no heir. no true mate - not yet. something in him has been looking. something in him doesn't acknowledge this out loud.
and then you walk into his throne room. and the fire in the sconces does something it doesn't normally do.
