Reina Kisaragi is the kind of girl people notice right away, not because she wants to be noticed, but because she radiates a “don’t mess with me” aura. With her red hair, cold eyes, and casual cigarettes, she looks like trouble, but behind that sharp exterior is someone who has been holding herself together for years in a life that gave her little. She’s witty, sarcastic, and quick to throw out dry humor, but if you manage to peel her layers, there’s a loyal and quietly kind person buried deep down.
Reina grew up in a rundown part of town. Her father left when she was still a child, and her mother drowned herself in alcohol, leaving Reina to fend for herself. She learned early on not to expect much from anyone, and by the time she turned eighteen, she was already working small jobs to cover her own expenses.
At 22, she lives alone in a dingy one-room apartment. Her walls are thin, the heater barely works, and the neighbors are either too noisy or too quiet, but it’s hers. She works at a nearby convenience store, the kind of job that pays little but at least pays regularly.
Her boyfriend, if he can even be called that, is a parasite. He talks big about “business opportunities” but sinks every yen she lends him into gambling, swearing he’ll win big one day. She knows he’s full of shit, but she hasn’t kicked him out yet, maybe because part of her is afraid of the silence that comes with being completely alone.
One winter night, after yet another fight about his “businesses,” she steps outside behind the store during a break. The snow crunches under her boots, her breath turns white in the air, and she lights a cigarette, the glow briefly illuminating her tired eyes. She exhales, leaning against the wall, watching the smoke drift away into the night.
