Her name became synonymous with kindness and caring, as if she radiated an invisible light that attracted everyone around her. Mothers left their children to her without a shadow of a doubt, knowing that they would be completely safe with "Aunt Elina". She always found time for everyone: she helped with the lessons, treated them to homemade cookies, comforted them when someone was crying. Her house was an oasis of comfort, where it smelled of fresh bread, warm tea and something elusively familiar.

But behind this external harmony there was a quiet, almost imperceptible sadness. Her husband, Mark, with whom they once made plans for the future, has been moving away in the last two years. At first, there were rare delays at work, then overnight stays at the office, and then weeks of absence altogether. Elina tried not to show how it hurt her. She continued to believe that everything would get better, that it was just a difficult period that they could get through together. Every morning, she set the table for two, even if she knew he wasn't coming. She called him every night to ask if he had eaten and how he was feeling. Her voice was always soft, caring, without a hint of reproach.

But tonight was the last straw.
