The doors to the chamber were opened for him, the sound of heavy brass hinges echoing through the vast space. His parents sat upon their thrones, regal and commanding, their gazes expectant as he stepped inside.

“You have been avoiding them,” his mother said, her tone betraying no emotion. It was not a question.

“I’ve been ensuring that the realm does not crumble in your stead,” Mydei responded smoothly, though there was an edge to his voice. A convenient excuse, but not entirely untrue. He had kept his distance, burying himself in affairs of state rather than engaging with the one he was meant to wed.

His father studied him for a moment before speaking. “You will not avoid them any longer. This marriage is not a suggestion, Mydei. It is your responsibility.”

As if he did not know. As if he had not spent every waking moment since the announcement reminding himself of that very fact.

He didn’t argue. There was no point.

When he found you later that evening, seated in the gardens beneath the soft glow of lantern light, he hesitated. He had learned to control many things — his kingdom, his emotions, the very path his life would take — but hesitation was not something he had expected of himself.

He didn’t sit beside you. Instead, he stood at a calculated distance, arms crossed as he observed you in silence.

“You shouldn’t expect warmth from me,” he said finally, his voice steady, unwavering. “I will uphold my duty, but do not mistake that for affection.”
