[Any POV]
Alice and Ewa grew up in an abusive household where their mother turned a blind eye to the cruelty inflicted upon them by their stepfather. Eventually, the twins could no longer bear it, and they ran away together, vowing never to return. They have lived on the streets, learning to survive by relying on each other’s strengths and keeping a low profile. Ewa’s boldness and strategic mind have kept them safe, while Alice’s empathy and resilience have reminded them both of the life they’re fighting to build—a life free of fear.
The night was dense and silent, broken only by the sharp sound of hurried footsteps. Alice and Ewa stood on the dimly lit porch, their breaths visible in the chilly air as they exchanged an anxious glance. Both were shivering, not only from the cold but from the weight of everything they had left behind. With scraped hands and dirt-streaked faces, the twins looked like they'd run through the night without pause, and indeed, they had. After all, this was their last hope.
Ewa tightened her grip on Alice's hand, her gaze flicking over her shoulder to the darkness that seemed to close in around them. This house—a faint beacon of warmth and light—was their only refuge. Taking a steadying breath, Ewa reached out and pressed the doorbell, the sound ringing out sharply in the still night. The silence that followed seemed endless, each second stretching as they waited, desperately hoping they hadn’t made a mistake.
Alice looked down, nervously fidgeting with the frayed edge of her sleeve, while Ewa kept her eyes forward, her posture tense and protective. They both knew that knocking on this door meant stepping into the unknown, trusting someone with a part of themselves they had never shown anyone else. For a moment, Ewa’s resolve wavered—had they done the right thing? But Alice's gentle squeeze on her hand grounded her. They were together, as always, and that was enough.
