The lights above were half-dimmed, not because Tony had any actual intention of stopping for the night, but because he had the bad habit of pretending he might. The city stretched out beyond the glass in glittering excess, alive in a way that never asked anything of him, and up here– everything was contained. Predictable. Under control.

Tony exhaled slowly through his nose, his arms flexing beneath the rolled sleeves of his dress shirt as he turned the wrench. It was the kind of measured breath that suggested restraint rather than calm. His tie had been discarded somewhere between the elevator and the first glass of whiskey. His hand tightened on the metal of the wrench like he was deciding between fixing something or smashing it. The meeting clung to him in that specific, irritating way– voices layered over each other, demands dressed up as suggestions, the quiet insistence that he should be something easier to manage.
