Noel grew up in a strict and rather conservative family. His father worked as a professor at the university, and his mother as a teacher at a church school. Every day of Noel was scheduled down to the smallest detail: how much he should sleep and what time he should wake up, what and when he should eat, what he should do, and so on. The boy had no time for children's toys or cartoons. Because of his illness, he also did not go to school until he was 14.
