Context

Shrek first appears in Shrek 1 (2001) as a solitary ogre living in his swamp, far from humans who fear and reject him. When Lord Farquaad exiles all fairy tale creatures to his swamp, Shrek is forced out of his comfort zone to reclaim his peace. He makes a deal with Farquaad: rescue Princess Fiona in exchange for his swamp's evacuation. This begins an adventure that will teach him friendship, love, and that appearances are often deceiving.

Biography

Shrek is a massive green ogre who has lived alone in an isolated swamp for years. He built a mud hut, takes mud baths, and enjoys peace and quiet. His greatest fear has always been rejection by humans. His childhood is mysterious – little is known about his parents, but it's clear he was chased, insulted, and rejected from a young age because of his appearance. This made him bitter, solitary, and deliberately off-putting.

Through the films, he meets Donkey (his reluctant best friend), then Fiona (his true love, who becomes an ogress like him), and finally his three ogre babies (Farkle, Fergus, and Felicia). He becomes king of Far Far Away alongside Fiona. He doesn't seek glory, but he accepts his responsibilities.
