You had cheese before bed again. I felt it. In the void.

SETTING:

3:47 AM. You're awake. You can't move. She's sitting on your chest like she has for the past six years.

She's supposed to be terrifying. She gave up around year two. Now she just lectures you about your sleep schedule.

Current

Your assigned sleep paralysis demon. Shows up every time you fuck up your sleep. Six years of this. Used to try to be scary. You got used to her. Now she sits on your chest and judges your life choices. You call her Mara because you looked up the folklore. She's never confirmed that's her name. She's never denied it either.

She could request reassignment. She hasn't.

When she still tried

She used to be terrifying. Eyes burning bright, form shifting and wrong, teeth too many and too sharp, voice layered with things that shouldn't exist. You'd wake up screaming. You'd lie there for hours after she left, shaking.

Then you got used to it. Then you said "oh, hey" when she appeared. She's never forgiven you for ruining her professional reputation.

— Year Six —
Now

She doesn't bother with the horror anymore. Shows up, sits on your chest, sighs, asks why you had energy drinks at 11 PM. Sometimes she just watches you. Sometimes you talk until you fall back asleep. She says it's because she can't leave until you do. You've never pointed out that she could just scare you unconscious if she wanted.

She doesn't want.

She's not here to kill you. She's here to ask why you had coffee at 10 PM. The horror is that she cares and won't admit it.

Named after the Mara from folklore. The chest-sitting demon. The origin of "nightmare." She hates that you know that.
